WINTER 2004-05: Wisconsin weather can not be predicted..

What a winter we are having this year! As I write this article, the weather is in the 50’s and water is everywhere. Its almost hard to remember this is winter and not spring. Quite a change from early in the winter season when everything was frozen. Many customers were surprised at the amount of water it took to keep up with the formation of ice in the streams and waterfalls. A few customers decided to change their ponds from a running waterfall to a de-icer (adapter on the pump) which seemed to help with water loss due to ice. For the customers who kept up with the ice formations, the look of the pond in the winter was breath taking with the ice and snow all around the pond. This year many customers sent us some great winter photos. As spring gets closer, I want to remind all pond owners that this is the hardest time on your fish. The transition from inter dormancy to spring temperatures is extremely hard on the fish's health. This is nature’s way of filtering out the weaker fish from the stronger fish in natural water ways. You may have found your fish this winter in the skimmer. This is due to the dormancy of their bodies, they are weak and get drawn in by the pump, simply return them to the far end of the pond. As spring gets closer, hold off feeding your fish until the water temps are constantly above 50 degrees day and night. Don’t let their begging get to you! Start using bacteria again when the temps are about 50 degrees but hold off if you are having your pond spring cleaned! This spring we at Pond Professors are proud to announce new services, new products and a NEW LOCATION of the retail store!!! We will be offering more classes, monthly specials , and more community events in 2005. We hope you can join us this season.

Spring 2005 Exciting New Changes and New Products!!

Pond Professors is growing and proud to announce a new larger location for its retail store and showroom!! The Lily Pad will be re-opening April 16th within the Oak Village Garden Center complex on Hwy 26. We will be able to offer a larger selection of fish, aquatic plants, pond supplies and garden accessories. Combining our location with Oak Village will give our customers access to all the products of Oak Village and their landscape installation services. Both companies will be separate but offer products and services in one convenient location. Together we will offer experts on water gardening and land plants to help with your garden projects. Stop in to see all the new products and talk with our staff about our expanded services. We have added more staff to both our retail and construction division which will give us a maintenance division this year. The Lily Pad has new products and information to share. We spent the winter learning the latest and greatest watergardening facts. At our new location, we are working with Oak Village to install a variety of water gardens with the plan to create an area you can tour to get different ideas for your personal project. Stop in to see our new greenhouse and indoor watergarden. We will be hosting an Open House this spring when all the dust is settled. We look forward to seeing you at our new location.

N.A.W.G.S...
North American Water Garden Society

As many of our customers know, we are part of a local pond club called W.S.C.A.P.E.S. located in Rock county with members from all over Wisconsin and Illinois. Last year, the local club joined N.A.W.A.G.S. as a local charter club. N.A.W.A.G.S. mission is to be an organization that will unite clubs across the country in the common pursuit of the water gardening hobby. This national organization of pond lovers is dedicated to the Enjoyment, Education, Promotion and Protection of the water gardening hobby. By working together, this organization believes that as a group they can be very influential when government officials are making decisions. Providing them with accurate information and making sure they are aware of the facts, when a major regulatory issue is raised. There are a number of issues threatening the water garden hobby currently. From Water restrictions, Plant and Fish Regulations, West Nile Virus, Building, Safety and Insurance Issues. At this time, the local club meets monthly during the spring and summer season to share in goodwill at different club members homes. Our Kickoff meeting is March 16th, at 6:30pm, at the Story Home. This club for the past 2 years has sponsored the Parade of Ponds for Charity. This year’s tour will be held Nationally as all clubs will hold their tour the same weekend, July 9 & 10, across the U.S. For more information please call our office or check out the website at: www.pondprofessors.com/wscapes or www.nawgs.com. This club is open to everyone who simply has an interest in water gardening.

It’s Time for Annual Cleanouts!!

Even though the ice hasn’t begun to thaw, we’ve already found ourselves dreaming of lilies, dragonflies, and frogs. Before we know it, our ponds and fish will be waking up from their long winter nap looking towards the new season. Spring cleanouts begin as soon as the ice melts and when it doesn’t look like its coming back. Usually late March or early April. We group cleanouts geographically and do as many as possible in a day. We typically clean out around 100 ponds each spring and are done by the last week of April. In order to continue providing this cleanout service at last year’s costs, we request that you include your credit card number so we can efficiently process all jobs as soon as the services are completed. Before your spring cleanout will be performed, we will need the $65 Destination Charge and any ordered items paid in full. An itemized receipt will be mailed after we have processed everything. If you go to our Company Forms Page, you fill find the form for signing up to be on our annual cleanout schedule. We will only be able to complete a limited amount of cleanouts before our construction season has to begin. Sign up now as spots do fill quickly. All products ordered will be personally delivered to your home when we arrive for the cleanout. All customers who sign up prior to March 15th, receive a FREE 4 oz. Dry Bacteria. When the cleanout schedule is set, we will contact your home with the approximate date of service. Remember to have power on at the pond along with your water spigot turned on near the pond.

We need your help!!
We really do!!

We are looking for pond photos of people enjoying their watergarden. Many times we take pictures of the ponds but without anyone home enjoying them. If you have any photos of people enjoying your pond, please send us a copy. We are also working to put together a brochure of pond stories, what a pond does for your stress level and why you enjoy your water garden. This brochure is to share information about water gardening and does not need to be about Pond Professors but simply about the fun of water gardening. Dig thru your pictures and send us a copy along with your thoughts on watergardening. We are working with the local pond club to give people more information about watergardening and hoping to correct some bad information about the hobby. Remember, any tips or suggestions you have for a new person to the hobby would be appreciated. All of the photos and letters will be reviewed by Pond Professors and Aquascape Designs for possible use in Aquascapes National Magazine. Imagine people across the U.S. seeing your watergarden photos and looking to your advice for help and inspiration. For the local brochure any photos or letters used will qualify for a gift certificate from The Lily Pad retail store. Photos and letters can be submitted via the web or simply send them to our office.
